Great Neck Dental Technology
Dr. Robert N. Goldsmith has spent over 20 years in pediatric dentistry work, and the one constant has been constant change. The field is constantly being updated, with new and better ways to treat patients. Children can benefit from a lot of the new dental technology that’s out there, and Pediatric Dentistry Community Drive takes pride in staying on the cutting edge.

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a treatment that effectively halts the progression of cavities without the need for drilling or invasive procedures. This liquid solution contains both fluoride, which strengthens teeth, and silver, which in turn fights bacterial infections. When applied to a decayed area, it can stop cavity advancement, sterilize the decay, and help protect the surrounding tooth structure.
The application of SDF is simple and pain-free, making it an ideal treatment for children, especially those who are anxious about dental visits or have difficulty sitting for traditional procedures. We paint a small amount of SDF onto the affected tooth, and within moments, the solution begins to work. While the treated area may darken in color, it signals that the decay is arrested and no longer spreading.
SDF is highly beneficial because it preserves as much of the natural tooth as possible and offers a quick, effective way to treat decay.

Nitrous Oxide and Advanced Sedation
Nitrous oxide, often referred to as “laughing gas,” is a popular sedation option in pediatric dentistry. It is a safe, mild sedative that helps children stay calm and comfortable during dental procedures. Delivered through a small mask placed over the nose, nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and inhaled, producing a light, relaxing effect. Children remain awake during the procedure but feel at ease and may even experience mild euphoria or tingling sensations.
Beyond nitrous oxide, advanced sedation options like oral sedatives and IV sedation are available for children with heightened dental anxiety or more complex treatment needs. These methods are administered under the supervision of trained professionals to ensure safety and comfort.
The benefits of nitrous oxide and advanced sedation can include reduced stress and fear, allowing children to tolerate dental visits more comfortably. Sedation also helps us perform procedures more efficiently, as patients are relaxed and cooperative. Importantly, these options create positive dental experiences, helping to prevent long-term dental anxiety.
